Konica Minolta MagiColor 5430DL

The Konica Minolta MagiColor 5430DL is a multifunction device from the Japanese camera specialists at Konica. As you would expect from a company with such a pedigree, the 5430DL is a solid performer that does justice to the brand.

It is a color printer, that makes easy work of just about everything you could throw at it. It’s print quality and design characteristics are designed to be attractive to the small office or workgroup and it is reviewed to reflect that.

The 5430DL is a breeze to install and configure, just unpack it and connect it, that’s about it. It can be attached by a USB, network or parallel port and includes drivers for both Windows, Linux and Mac. Toner can be added quickly and is quite cheap considering.

Adding the 5430DL to a network is slightly different to many of the other printers we have reviewed. This is a host-based printer which means it needs to be paired with a PC which will do most of the processing for it. This is just a matter of installing the software onto that PC and letting it be found on the network.

The printer produces good quality, sharp prints at a rate of 3 pages per minute for color and 3.4 for mono. While certainly not the fastest, it is perfectly acceptable. Text is where the 5430DL is at its best, being able to print at any size and produce good results each time, even at smaller points. Edges are smooth and clean, and toner is evenly spread across the larger letters.

There is a 250 sheet paper tray with the option to expand to 1250 with an extra pair of drawers that can take 500 sheets each. Replacement cartridges are easy to come by and will last an average of 6000 pages each. Changing them is simply a matter of removing a panel at the front and unclipping them from their housing. Then just replace them with new ones and recycle the empty ones. The process takes mere moments.

Overall the 5430DL is easy to use, easy to manage and easy to own. With the backing of a firm like Minolta, after-sales service should be good if you ever need it.

Cleaning a HP LaserJet 6P

The HP LaserJet 6P was a large format monochrome laser printer released by Hewlett Packard around 2005. It used industry leading technologies to produce good quality fast laser prints at decent speeds. It featured HP’s Resolution Enhancement Technology, (RET) which improved the default dpi through software manipulation.

If you still have one of these machines, chances are that it’s getting a little grubby on the outside. That’s easy to clean, but what about the components. Years of use and dust can play havoc with the performance and the components so it makes sense to clean it once in a while. Not only will it make it work better, but last longer too.

To clean a 6P you first have to turn it off and unplug it, both from the wall and the computer. We’ll be using liquid to clean it so we don’t want to electrocute ourselves or the computer.

Once unplugged, open the toner cartridge flap on the front and pull out the cartridge. Move it away from the printer, and rest it on something to prevent drips. While toner doesn’t dry up like ink, it can clog heads on occasion. Running a warm cloth or paper towel over the head will remove any gunk you might find there.

Look inside the recess for the cartridge to see the inner workings. Gently remove dust and dirt from the working parts, especially the ribbons and the moving parts. Don’t use water or anything here, use a cloth or another paper towel. Once clean, you can replace the cartridge and close the door.

The best thing to use when cleaning the exterior of the HP LaserJet 6P is spray window cleaner. Use sparingly, and spray onto a cloth instead of directly on the printer. Then wipe it down according the instructions on the bottle.

Once it’s clean, give the printer a wipe down with a fresh dry cloth and connect it all up again. It’s a good idea to clean the printer a couple of times a year, especially if you work in a dusty environment. Parts are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, so looking after the printer is essential for its longevity.

HP LaserJet 4000tn

The HP LaserJet 4000tn is a variant of Hewlett Packards 4000 series that includes networking and a second paper tray as standard. In HP parlance, the t means tray, for the extra paper tray, and the n means networking as standard. There are other options like d for duplexer, s for stacker and l for stapler. This nomenclature is standard across the HP range, and once you know it, makes it easy to follow through.

The main advantage of the 4000 series is the 100Mhz RISC processor. Its small, cool and plenty powerful enough to drive the printer. Coupled with a standard 8Mb of memory, expandable to much more, this printer can be scaled to cope with almost any workload. With a duty cycle of 65,000 pages per month, its capabilities belie its size.

At an average of 17 pages per minute, it wont take the 4000tn to get through its duty cycle. Its no slouch and still manages to print decent quality prints at that speed. It has a default 600 dpi which is fairly average, but HPs drivers can simulate 1200 with ease, which produces some impressively detailed prints.

Photographs are particularly well done considering this is a laser. Text is understandably the strong point though. All of the fonts, at whatever point appear clear, sharp and almost good enough to eat. All output is dark where it needs to be dark and light where it needs to be light. There is no blurring, spatter, smudging or anything to detract from the great job the machine does with the printing.

The toner lasts for a good 10,000 pages for a standard one, and 15,000 for a high yield version. They are replaced by accessing the flap and unclipping the old one, then replacing it with the new. There are no drums or fusers to worry about, just the one consumable. That makes it quite a cheap option for the cost conscious.

The 4000 series has been around for a while now, and has more than earned its spurs as a solid, reliable office printer. It just keeps on giving, long after others have given up the ghost and had to be replaced. If youre in the market for a printer, you could do a lot worse than an HP LaserJet 4000tn.

The Kyocera TASKalfa 250ci printer will do just this for your business. While it is a large floor model type printer, it will keep your printing needs met with proficiency. It will meet all of your needs and allow for you to concentrate on more important aspects of running a business.

Pros

The Kyocera TASKalfa 250ci can handle a large printing volume since it comes with two, 500 sheet paper trays as well as a 100 sheet multipurpose paper tray. This will help meet your large volume printing needs.

It has many features desktop printers don’t. It comes with a hole punch kit, a staple finisher and a job separator which will meet even more of your needs for your business.

Most businesses need to network and this printer has the option to either connect to a network with USB or an Ethernet cord.

It can handle a large printing volume because it has a 100,000 duty cycle which most printers in the same class do not.

It has a printing resolution of 600 x 600 dpi which will allow for the bet quality prints, photos and a small number of graphics.

Like every business, you probably need a ton of memory. The Kyocera TASKalfa 250ci will provide you with 80 GB of hard drive memory and 2GB of RAM.

The control panel will allow you to troubleshoot and configure the printer with ease.

Cons

Perhaps one of the worst things about this printer is that it does not come with a fax machine. However, it comes with the option of adding one. The modem comes with a speed of 33.6 kbps.

The warming time is slow at 45 seconds where most other printers in the same class are faster.

Because it is so big, you will need to find a space on the floor for it. It will not fit on a desk or shelf.
